We're pleased to announce that OraCMU®, built on the Weissella cibaria CMU strain, has been granted a Natural Product Number (NPN 80149686) by Health Canada.
Why this step comes first
Canada doesn't let you sell a natural health product and sort out the paperwork later. Under the Natural Health Products Regulations, a product licence is required before anything can be marketed — the review is pre-market by design.
So a licence isn't a trophy collected after the fact. It's the gate. Clearing it is what makes anything else in Canada possible, and that's what happened here.
What Health Canada assessed
To issue the licence, the Natural and Non-prescription Health Products Directorate (NNHPD) reviewed the medicinal ingredient, the supporting safety and efficacy evidence, the manufacturing quality, and every claim proposed for the label.
Doing that with a live probiotic strain carries its own burden. The identity and stability of a living organism have to be characterized and documented in ways a static compound never demands — which is exactly where a strain with a published evidence base and a documented history has something to submit.
The uses Health Canada authorized
A licence doesn't bless a product in general. It authorizes specific wording. These are the recommended uses authorized under NPN 80149686:
The third one is worth reading twice. It doesn't say the product masks odor. It says it helps reduce oral malodor by supporting a healthy oral microbiota — the mechanism is written into the authorized wording itself. That's the difference between covering something up and working on the environment underneath, and it's the distinction this brand exists to make.

Why a US reader might care about a Canadian licence
Fair question, and the honest answer is narrow.
The licence doesn't cross the border. It authorizes nothing here, and we won't pretend otherwise. What travels is smaller and still worth something: a second independent regulator, in a different country, under a different framework, looked at the evidence behind this strain and licensed it.
That's not a claim about your mouth. It's a statement about the documentation behind a strain — and it's checkable, which is the part that matters.
The other file: GRN 1063
This sits alongside an earlier North American milestone. In 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a "no questions" letter in response to the GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) notification for the use of W. cibaria CMU in food — GRN 1063, also public in FDA's GRAS Notice Inventory.
The two are not the same kind of thing, and conflating them would be easy and wrong:
- GRN 1063 (US) — about safety for the notified food uses. FDA reviewed the evidence and had no questions about the GRAS conclusion. It is not FDA approval; FDA does not approve dietary supplements. It says nothing about efficacy.
- NPN 80149686 (Canada) — a product licence covering safety, efficacy, and quality, with specific authorized wording, valid in Canada.
Two regulators, two different questions, two public files anyone can read. Neither substitutes for the other. Neither is a magic word.
